Our Experience

Wonders of Marrakesh and the Sahara: A Journey Through Morocco

Summary

In May 2023, we embarked on an unforgettable journey to Morocco, with the vibrant city of Marrakesh as our primary destination. Our stay was in a charming and cozy riad called Riad Dar El Souk, located just a short walk from two of the city’s iconic landmarks, Bahia Palace and Badi Palace. Its location was incredibly convenient, also being just a 10-minute walk from the bustling Jemaa el-Fna square, where the city’s energy truly comes alive, especially in the evenings. We loved how walkable many of the attractions were; in fact, we even took a pleasant stroll to the Jardin Majorelle, appreciating the beautiful weather that Morocco graced us with during our stay.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the trip was experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. Despite some preconceived notions you might read online, we found the locals to be incredibly friendly and welcoming, which truly enhanced our experience. Moroccan cuisine was another highlight — from the aromatic tajine dishes to the refreshing Moroccan mint tea, every meal was a delight, and we made sure to indulge in the country’s rich flavors.

Marrakesh’s souks were a whirlwind of colors, sounds, and textures, and getting lost in these historic marketplaces was like stepping into a living museum. Everywhere we turned, we felt surrounded by the depth of the city’s history and culture.

Our adventure didn’t stop there — we also opted for a road trip to Merzouga to experience the Sahara Desert. The journey to the desert was long but rewarding, and the moment we set foot in the Sahara, it was breathtaking. Riding camels through the vast dunes, we even found ourselves in the middle of an oncoming sandstorm, adding to the drama and thrill of the experience. We spent the night camping under the stars, surrounded by fellow travelers, and shared stories and laughter around the campfire. Along the way, we befriended a sweet Moroccan family who generously shared their culture with us, creating lasting memories and friendships.

Overall

Our trip to Morocco was a captivating blend of cultural immersion, adventure, and genuine human connection. From the bustling streets of Marrakesh to the serene dunes of the Sahara, every moment was filled with new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re exploring the historic souks, savoring the local cuisine, or marveling at the natural beauty of the desert, Morocco offers something for every traveler. It’s a destination that leaves a lasting impression, not just because of its stunning landscapes and rich history, but because of the warmth and kindness of its people. We left with our hearts full and a deep appreciation for this incredible country.
